HELEN Roalakona has made history after being officially sworn in as Papua New Guinea’s first female Public Prosecutor for a six-year term.
Ms Roalakona took her oath of office before Chief Justice Sir Gibs Salika and Minister for Justice and Attorney General Pila Niningi at the Waigani Courthouse today.
Speaking after the ceremony, Ms Roalakona acknowledged the weight of responsibility that comes with leading the Office of the Public Prosecutor (OPP).
“I understand the weight that comes with it, and I think what is reassuring is the support of the government and recognition of the Office of the Public Prosecutor and the role it plays,” she said.
Ms Roalakona said the current law-and-order situation in the country, coupled with PNG’s grey-listing, had placed increased attention on the need for effective prosecutions.
“It is an important time for the Office of the Public Prosecutor to step up to carry out its mandate and to uphold the rule of law, and that is really my focus in having taken on the office,” she said.
She identified strengthening the OPP’s capacity and manpower as key priorities, along with contributing to efforts to remove PNG from the grey list.
Chief Justice Sir Gibs Salika, who administered the oath, described the position as both daunting and important.
“Ms Roalakona represents the interest of Papua New Guineans. Whether it’s ten million or 12 million, she represents the entire country,” he said.
Mr Niningi congratulated Ms Roalakona, saying the country needed fearless public prosecutors who would uphold the law and move the country forward regardless of gender.
Ms Roalakona was confirmed and announced as Public Prosecutor on August 6 by Mr Niningi, following her service as Acting Public Prosecutor since May 2025.
Her appointment marks a significant milestone for women in PNG’s legal and public institutions.
