MOTOR Vehicle Insurance Limited (MVIL) has unveiled a new Driver Licence Card featuring advanced security measures aimed at preventing counterfeiting and fraud.
The upgraded licence card comes with four key security features: a specially designed layout and overlay, the official MVIL blue logo, a custom-made holographic laminate, and a hidden ultraviolet (UV) MVIL logo.
The security features have been custom-designed and exclusively copyrighted by MVIL, making the new card more difficult to reproduce or counterfeit.
MVIL will also distribute UV torches to key stakeholders, allowing them to detect the hidden UV features on the card and verify the authenticity of driver licences.
The new card is expected to strengthen the authentication process and help curb the circulation of fraudulent driver licences.
Speaking at the launching at MVIL’s Head office, Port Moresby, MVIL Chief Executive Officer Bafino Koi said that the reason for updating features of the driver license card was because of drivers using fake license and not complying with traffic rules which results in increasingly number of accidents.
Mr. Koi said that the driver license with secure features was to make sure that drivers are correctly identified, correctly trained and are aware of traffic rules before driving on the roads.
He added that the upgrade was important for MVIL as drivers are the key persons responsible for passengers-when accidents happen it affects MVIL operations in terms of claims.
“This product that is introduced with these security features, it is very important so that we can filter the drivers who are on the road are actually qualified and certified to be on the road,” Mr. Koi said.
Road Traffic Authority (RTA) manager enforcement, Kupa Tanda, said that there were many fake productions of driver license and it is difficult to identify a fake license from genuine license.
Mr. Tanda said that with the added security features, it will help RTA officers on roads.
MVIL will start issue the new driver license cards from Thursday 10th September, 2026 and onwards with the current license to be phased out by 31st January 2027.
