PORT Moresby will kick-start Papua New Guinea’s 51st Independence anniversary celebrations this Saturday with a Unity Walk expected to draw thousands of people from across the capital.
The Unity Walk, to be held on September 12, will begin at St Hubert Murray Barracks before participants make their way to Ela Beach, marking the official start of a series of Independence activities planned across the city.
National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop said the event would bring together people from different communities, cultures and backgrounds to celebrate Papua New Guinea’s journey as one nation.
More than 10,000 people are expected to participate, with 10,000 T-shirts to be distributed to create a strong display of the national colours as the procession moves through the streets of Port Moresby.
Parkop said the Unity Walk would be more than just the opening event of the celebrations, describing it as an opportunity for residents to reflect on the country’s achievements and consider its future as it moves beyond its 50th anniversary.
The walk will usher in a series of events scheduled across Port Moresby from September 12 to 16, including the Amazing Port Moresby Arts and Music Festival, the One City, One People, One Country Festival at Unagi and the Festival of a Thousand Tribes.
The celebrations are expected to bring together residents, visitors and people travelling into the capital for the Independence festivities.
NCDC City Manager Ravu Frank urged everyone taking part to celebrate peacefully and responsibly while respecting fellow citizens.
“Let’s celebrate in the true meaning of independence and respect one another,” Frank said.
He encouraged residents to use the celebrations to showcase Papua New Guinea’s identity, culture, heritage and traditions in a positive manner.
“We are so diverse but united together,” he said, reaffirming the message that Papua New Guinea remains “one country, one nation, one people.”
With thousands expected on the streets, the Unity Walk will provide Port Moresby with a colourful start to the 51st Independence celebrations and set the tone for several days of cultural, musical and community activities across the capital.
Residents, visitors and those travelling into Port Moresby have been encouraged to join the celebrations, observe the laws and help make the Independence festivities a safe and memorable occasion.
