TWO Members of Parliament have taken on new responsibilities in the Marape-Rosso Government, with Prime Minister James Marape saying their appointments will give them valuable experience in national leadership.
Usino-Bundi MP Vincent Kumura has been appointed Vice Minister Assisting the Prime Minister, while Porgera-Paiela MP Gidron Maso Karipe will serve as Vice Minister for Petroleum.
The two MPs were sworn into office by Governor-General Sir Bob Dadae at Government House in Port Moresby today, in the presence of senior government leaders.
Mr Marape said vice-ministerial positions were important training grounds for elected leaders preparing to take on greater responsibilities in government.
He drew on his own experience as a vice minister in 2007 and 2008, when he served in the Works, Transport and Civil Aviation portfolios.
Mr Marape said the experience exposed him to major infrastructure programmes and helped broaden his understanding of government.
“I have a special place for vice ministers. It is an important breeding ground for the step up to the next level,” he said.
He said both Mr Kumura and Mr Karipe were well placed to gain experience in their respective portfolios and contribute to the Government’s work.
The Prime Minister also linked the appointments to his Independence message, saying the country’s older leaders had a responsibility to mentor those coming through the ranks.
Mr Kumura, who succeeds the late Jimmy Uguro through a by-election, and Mr Karipe, who won the Porgera-Paiela by-election following the death of his father, will serve in their new roles as the Government prepares for the next national election.
Mr Marape congratulated both MPs and urged them to use the opportunity to gain experience and contribute meaningfully to the country.
