Mirupasi joins race for Moresby North-West by-election

By HARLYNE JOKU

INTENDING Candidate and Sunday Bulletin General Manager Lapan Lims Mirupasi pledges to provide water and basic services to Morata and the settlements in the Port Moresby North-West electorate that are currently lacking and in dire need.

Mr Mirupasi who nominated on Thursday March 4 said the purpose of him nominating to contest Moresby North-West electorate is because he feels strongly for the people living in parts of the electorate who lack proper basic services such as water and electricity for many years.

“This is Port Moresby city and yet people of Morata and other settlements carry buckets of water to wash and drink from. This is not right. This is totally unfair for our people,” Mr Mirupasi said.

“So my intention to contest this by-election is to ensure that people in the electorate have access to basic needs such as water and electricity, proper roads in settlements and basic education, SMEs to mothers and support youths in sporting activities etc.

“If I am given the mandate, I will make sure that water is connected to all the houses in settlements that have no water. I have seen and witnessed myself, mothers fetching water in buckets to wash and cook with. We are in Port Moresby, women cannot be carrying water all the time. That is my purpose of contesting,” Mr Mirupasi said.

Mr Mirupasi is standing as an independent candidate because he was not able to get party affiliation.

“I have my supporters and voters in the city. I know that I am able to win,” a confident Mr Mirupasi said.

“Today you see me; I am dressed in black because I respect the late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare and the former Member, the late Sir Mekere.

“That is why I did not bring my supporters here because I respect the recent passing on of PNG’s two great leaders. Let’s show a sign of respect like true Melanesians,” Mr Mirupasi told the media after his nomination.

Mr Mirupasi is from Kagua in the Southern Highlands province.
