TWENTY-SEVEN (27) men have been arrested and charged, and are now remanded at the Buimo Correctional Institution, following two months of intensive, coordinated law enforcement operations in connection with the outbreak of violence that occurred on April 26 at Sambio Village, Bulolo District of Morobe Province.
Morobe Provincial Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Samson Siguyaru, has officially announced the successful completion of a major investigation into the tragic incident known as the “Sambio Massacre” that happened between 7:00 am and 11:00 am on 26 April 2026, where a violent confrontation erupted between members of the Bendum family and residents of the Dusty Community and surrounding areas of Sambio Village.
He said twenty-five suspects have each been charged with twelve (12) counts of Wilful Murder, while two suspects were charged with six (6) counts of Arson. He further added that police also seized four factory-manufactured firearms, including a modified .303 calibre rifle fitted with a telescopic sight.
PPC Siguyaru said all twenty-seven accused persons had appeared before the Bulolo District Court on Monday, July 13, and they were issued Warrants of Remand. They were then transported to Buimo on Tuesday for detention pending further court proceedings.
He said according to the initial reports, twelve people were brutally killed and six residential houses were completely destroyed by fire, leading to extensive property damage and widespread trauma inflicted upon the local community. PPC Siguyaru said that due to the situation, a special investigation team was established, which comprises police officers from Morobe and the National Capital District, leading to the successful arrest of the 27 suspects who are now detained at Buimo awaiting their court dates.
