NINETY-FOUR new lawyers were admitted to the Bar of Papua New Guinea’s National and Supreme Courts yesterday, marking the first cohort to be sworn in at the new Waigani National and Supreme Court House Complex in Port Moresby.

The historic ceremony represented the final step for graduates of the Legal Training Institute as they begin their professional careers as fully qualified lawyers.

Chief Justice Sir Gibuma Gibbs Salika formally welcomed and congratulated the new lawyers, while also acknowledging the pride of parents and guardians on this significant milestone in Papua New Guinea’s judicial system.

Addressing the graduates, Chief Justice Salika encouraged them to uphold ethical standards and maintain integrity as they enter the legal profession.

“It is a big achievement to be admitted as a lawyer in Papua

New Guinea. You must be proud of yourselves and remain committed to integrity, maintaining good relationships with the public and fellow lawyers so that you build a strong reputation,” he said.

“When you establish yourself as a good lawyer, you will feel proud, and others will respect you as a valued member of society.”

He urged the new lawyers to avoid misconduct, cautioning them not to damage their careers by making poor choices, referencing instances where lawyers have faced imprisonment.

“As you begin practicing law, you must build a reputation for being fearless and principled,” he said.

Chief Justice Salika reminded the cohort of their important role in society.

“Being a lawyer is a significant responsibility in Papua New Guinea. Lawyers are not ordinary citizens—people look up to you to help solve their problems,” he said.

“Now that you step outside this courtroom, remember you are no longer trainees but qualified lawyers. Welcome to the profession.”
