PRIME Minister James Marape has outlined a broader national agenda centred on governance performance, institutional integrity, and leadership renewal, as Papua New Guinea moves towards the 2027 National General Elections.

Prime Minister Marape said the Government’s priority remains delivering results for the people rather than engaging in premature election narratives.

“Our responsibility is not to speculate about elections, but to deliver outcomes for our people. Roads, agriculture, jobs, law and order — these are the issues that matter. The people will judge us on performance,” he said.

Prime Minister Marape stressed that electoral success in Papua New Guinea has always been determined by delivery, not positioning.

He noted that past elections have shown governments winning and losing seats across the country, reflecting the independent will of voters.

“You win some, you lose some. That is democracy. No Government can predetermine outcomes — the people always decide,” he said.

The Prime Minister highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen democratic systems ahead of 2027, including closer coordination with the Electoral Commission and enhanced parliamentary oversight.

He said maintaining inclusive oversight arrangements reflects Government’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

“We are ensuring that election preparation is robust, transparent, and open to scrutiny,” he said.

Prime Minister Marape outlined a forward-looking approach to election security focused on professionalism and neutrality.

Proposed measures include reinforcing strict non-partisanship among security personnel, strengthening Police leadership in election operations, and tightening disciplinary measures for misconduct.

“Security forces are there to protect the process — not participate in it. Their role is to ensure every citizen can vote freely and safely,” he said.

Prime Minister Marape confirmed that the PANGU Pati will proceed to its national convention in June, where leadership and organisational reforms will be considered.

These include strengthening internal democracy, reviewing leadership structures, and advancing proposals for leadership renewal.

“Political parties must continue to evolve. Leadership must be renewed and future leaders prepared,” he said.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed that Government decisions, including leadership appointments, are based on merit, performance, and the need for stability.

“Continuity in leadership ensures that we deliver on our commitments and complete our national agenda,” he said.

Prime Minister Marape called on all stakeholders, including the media and political leaders, to contribute responsibly to national discourse.“Our country deserves informed, responsible dialogue that builds confidence and unity,” he said.

He urged citizens to approach the 2027 elections with seriousness and responsibility. “Elections determine the future of our nation. I encourage every Papua New Guinean to vote wisely, based on leadership, policy, and integrity,” he said.

Prime Minister Marape concluded by reaffirming that Papua New Guinea’s democracy rests firmly in the hands of its people.

“No institution or individual can decide election outcomes. The people of Papua New Guinea will decide-as they always have,” he said.
