THE Chief Censor of Papua New Guinea has joined media professionals and other stakeholders in celebrating World Press Freedom Day with the theme ‘Shaping a Future of Rights, Freedom of Expression as a driver for all other Human Rights’.
Mr Jim Abani said this day (March 3rd) holds great significance for journalists worldwide and is an opportunity to acknowledge the critical role that media plays in informing and educating people on development issues.
“As the regulator for all forms of mass mediums of communication, the Chief Censor has witnessed the vital role that media plays in promoting freedom of speech and expression in Papua New Guinea. With the guidance of the National Constitution, the journey towards achieving media freedom has been exciting,” Mr Abani said.
In his speech, the Chief Censor commended the excellent work of journalists and media workers in providing the public with critical information that broadens our view of the world and holds individuals and institutions accountable.
He also saluted the pioneers who passed on and encouraged current and upcoming journalists to continue being gatekeepers of information.
The Chief Censor emphasized on the importance of respecting and protecting the ‘Human Rights’ of others when reporting, as it is their right when publishing and broadcasting on media. He reminded journalists to be responsible when discharging their duties, despite the risks, criticism, and mistreatment from viewers, readers, and listeners.
On this day, the fundamental principles of press freedom are celebrated around the world. The protection and promotion of a free, independent, and diverse media, online as well as offline, is critical to the functioning of inclusive, peaceful, and democratic societies.
The Chief Censor paid tribute to journalists who lost their lives in performing their duties worldwide and saluted the pillars who set the fundamental principles of press freedom in Papua New Guinea. He encouraged journalists to continue being gatekeepers of information for the people of Papua New Guinea and the world on political, economic, and social issues affecting societies.
