THE International Training Institute (ITI) has signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IHG Hotels and Resorts and Crowne Plaza Residences, creating a formal pathway for students to gain hands-on industry experience.

The partnership builds on an existing arrangement that has seen ITI students undertake on-the-job training at Crowne Plaza.

Under the MoU, students studying Tourism, Hospitality and other related courses will have opportunities for practical training across IHG’s three Port Moresby properties, with potential employment opportunities after graduation.

Crowne Plaza Residences General Manager David Shayestehfar said the agreement formalised discussions that began following a meeting at APEC Haus.

“We’ve brought together ITI and IHG in what is now a formal recognition of something we’re incredibly proud of,” Mr Shayestehfar said.

“We’ve already had students involved in events here and we’re excited to expand those opportunities.”

ITI chairman and co-founder Kumaran Sentheyvel said practical experience was critical for students preparing to enter the tourism industry.

“Education is one side, practical experience is another,” Mr Sentheyvel said.

“This is a good opportunity for our students to see behind the scenes of a first-class institution. The more experience they get, the better their future job opportunities.”

He said ITI would work to link more diploma internships with IHG and Crowne Plaza.

IHG PNG Portfolio General Manager Anne Busfield described the agreement as a milestone for the partners and PNG’s tourism sector.

“This is a long-term partnership. Our three hotels —

Holiday Inn and Suites, Holiday Inn Express and Crowne Plaza Residences — will all be part of the MoU,” Ms Busfield said.

She said students would gain exposure to front office operations, restaurants, bars, banqueting, conferences, commercial and finance support areas.

“Classroom training is important, but you can’t beat practical, hands-on experience,” Ms Busfield said.

She said IHG was pleased to support the future growth of PNG’s tourism and hospitality industry through the partnership.
