CCOMMISSIONER of Police David Manning has commended people and communities across Papua New Guinea for marking the nation’s 51st Independence anniversary in a spirit of peace, respect and national unity.
Commissioner Manning said that while provincial commands were continuing to report isolated incidents and police had made arrests in a number of cases, the overall atmosphere across the country was positive and the Independence period was largely safe and peaceful.
“I thank the people of our country, our church and community leaders, and the police personnel who worked together to promote safety and calm in the lead-up to our National Day and throughout the Independence weekend,” Commissioner Manning said.
“A large Police operation was undertaken across all regions, involving police, communities and local leadership to coordinate engagement at the local level, and this was well received.
“Independence Day is the time for our people to demonstrate the modern Papua New Guinea that is moving forward and delivering better standards of living for our people.
“In recent years, we have seen a decline in criminal and disorderly behaviour during national holidays. Police will continue working with communities and local leaders to build on this progress and further improve public safety.”
“Further reports are being received about incidents during the Independence period, including traffic fatalities. These incidents were isolated and not widespread, and the overwhelming majority of communities celebrated peacefully and responsibly.”
“Regrettably, a serious isolated offence was reported in Oro Province. Further information will be released as the investigation progresses. The incident is connected to an ongoing youth crime problem involving drug use and criminal gangs that show no respect for our culture or laws. Specialist police personnel are being deployed to locate those responsible, disrupt the activities of this group and protect the law-abiding people of Oro Province.”
“A maritime incident was also reported in East New Britain during the Independence period, resulting in search and rescue operations over several days. Investigations are continuing and a report will be prepared for the Coroner. I thank local police and provincial authorities for their prompt response. This incident is another sober reminder that the sea must never be taken lightly and that every necessary precaution must be taken before setting out in a boat.”
Commissioner Manning confirmed police were already preparing for a series of significant events in the months ahead, including the Christmas and New Year period and the lead-up to the 2027 National General Election.
He assured the nation that police would maintain a sustained operational tempo to plan, coordinate and deliver safety and security operations throughout this period.
