Former NRL ref highlights areas to drive PNGRFL

By GABRIEL KATUHO

FORMER National Rugby League referee Tony Archer has highlighted several areas that the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) and franchises should consider for their clubs’ betterment from season 2024 onwards.

He said it is important for the PNGNRLC as an organization, collaborate with its clubs.

“By working with clubs, we can give them the tools to improve rugby league at the elite level in Papua New Guinea,” Archer said.

He said franchise managers should have a good working relationship with their federations in any sport as this is a key for betterment.

Archer said, the closer franchise administrators work with their clubs, the more likely they are to win.

“The most important thing for the PNGNRLC is to set its expectations, get the franchises to know those expectations and work together for the betterment of rugby league in the country.”

“Fans are the most important people involved in the game.

“They spend money to come in and watch; they buy the merchandise and have their children involved in the game,” he said.

Archer said for a better and stronger team, the involvement of the children must be considered.

He said getting children involved at an early age can build interest and passion for the game.

“The stronger and better our clubs are, the better our administration is. This will then will attract more of our people in this country to play the game.”

Archer said the PNGNRLC was working with the franchises to assess past performances and strategise ways for improvement.

The former NRL referee was speaking during the media call after the PNGRFL-organized Franchise Managers’ Conference on Wednesday.
