Low risk prisoners ready to provide free labor

By JAMES APA GUMUNO

THE low risk prisoners from Barawaghi Jail are avaliable to provide free labor for any community development projects in Jiwaka and Chimbu province.

The prisoners want to work with district development authorities and provincial administrations in the two provinces on any social projects under their rehabilitation program.

Jail commander Superintendent John Elu said that they (prisoners) are ready to go out and provide free labor.

Supt Elu said the jail currently has 400 prisoners, both high and low risk prisoners from Chimbu and neghboring Jiwaka province.

“This program is only for our low risk prisoners, high risk prisoners will forever lock behind bars,” he said.

Supt Elu said that the lower risk prisoners would do free work on any community developments initiated by any District Development Authority in the two provinces.

He said that it’s part of the rehabilitation program of the prisoners to come out and participate in community development projects.

Elu said the prisoners would provide free labor and this would help save cost for the district development authorities and provincial administrations.

“We are avaliable and looking forward to partner with the districts and provincial administrations,” he said.

Supt Elu urged political leaders and provincial administrations from the two provinces to assist the jail to roll out its rehabilitation programs.

He said since Jiwaka didn’t have a jail, all prisoners from Jiwaka are rehabilitated in Chimbu.

Elu added that Jiwaka Provincial Government must assist Barawaghi Jail in whatever ways it can.

Supt Elu was speaking during the launching of cleanathon program on Wednesday at Barawaghi Jail where first batch of low risk prisoners were engaged to clean 2km section of the road from Koronigle Bridge to Kerowagi.
