A man has been arrested by the National Capital District police on eight counts relating to forgery.
Metropolitan Superintendent Warrick Simitab confirmed that the man was arrested and charged after a formal complaint of stealing by false pretences was lodged at the Nine Mile police station in March.
MetSupt Simitab said it was alleged the man from Western Highlands Province was engaged in an online business, illegally posting his services to produce NID, driver’s licenses and other documents.
He said one of the victims who saw the online advertisement communicated with the man and then paid K1,700 to him on several occasions, requesting him to obtain a driver’s license.
MetSupt Simatab said after receiving the money, the man produced the license. The complainant was then arrested by the police, who examined the license and confirmed that it was fake and not genuine.
“I am happy with the officers who dealt with the case that led to the apprehension of the man who would have scammed many others in the future,” MetSupt Simatab said.
“The officers, after sighting the fake license, worked closely with the victim, who led them to where the man was, which resulted in his arrest and detention.”
The man was later formally charged with three counts of uttering, three counts of forgery, one count of misappropriation, and one count of false pretences.
Simatab thanked the Nine Mile police station commander and his officers for their well-coordinated police work.
“There are many people who are doing this using technology,” said MetSupt Simatab. “My warning to all is that if you are doing this, you must stop.”
He added that the man is now detained at Boroko police station and will appear in court when his court documents are ready.
