HELA Province is set to mark a historic milestone on Friday, April 24, 2026, with the official opening of key infrastructure and services aimed at transforming the region’s economic and social landscape.

Governor Philip Aja Undialu announced that the new Bank South Pacific (BSP) branch at the Hela 2 Building will be officially opened, replacing a temporary container facility that has served the province for over 12 years. The modern facility is expected to provide improved banking services, including better seating, enhanced security, and proper amenities for customers.

BSP Chairman Robert Bradshaw and Group Chief Executive Officer Mark T. Robinson are expected to officiate the opening, alongside a delegation from the bank.

In addition, the Internal Revenue Commission (IRC) will officially establish its provincial office in Hela, marking a significant step in decentralizing government services.

Acting Commissioner General Sam Loi will lead the opening, with participation from the Investment Promotion Authority (IPA), whose Managing Director Clarence M. Hoot is also expected to attend.

Governor Undialu highlighted that the new IRC presence, in partnership with IPA, will ease the financial burden on residents who previously had to travel to Port Moresby to access essential services.

“For many years, our people have spent thousands of kina on travel and accommodation just to access services worth less than K1,000. Today, that hardship ends,” he said.

The developments are expected to boost small and medium enterprises (SMEs), strengthen the business environment, and support economic growth in the province.

Meanwhile, Minister for Police Sir John Pundari and Police Commissioner David Manning will officiate the opening of nearly 40 new police houses at Enopi Barracks. They will also receive 10 new vehicles provided by the Hela Provincial Government and launch a Gun Surrender and Amnesty Program.

Governor Undialu stressed that while these developments are significant, lasting progress depends on peace and stability within the province.

“Development will only have meaning if there is peace,” he said, calling on residents to reject tribal fighting, surrender illegal firearms, and work towards unity.

He urged the more than 500,000 people of Hela to stand together in support of law and order, education, and a better future for the next generation.

The Governor also called on the public to turn out in numbers to celebrate the occasion and extend a warm welcome to visiting dignitaries.

“This is a great day for Hela—a day worth celebrating,” he said.
