The Government of Papua New Guinea, through the National Disaster Centre (NDC), has officially handed over humanitarian relief supplies to the Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG) in response to the impacts of Tropical Cyclone Maila.

The second batch of the assistance package includes both food and essential non-food items such as shelter materials, tarpaulins, tents, water containers, and other critical supplies aimed at supporting communities severely affected by the cyclone. These supplies are intended to provide immediate relief and support early recovery efforts across impacted areas in Bougainville.

At a small but significant handover ceremony at Buka Airport, the Director of the NDC, Mr. Laso Mana, emphasized the Government’s commitment to ensuring timely and coordinated disaster response efforts, particularly in reaching remote and vulnerable communities. This intervention reflects the Government’s continued priority to safeguard lives and restore basic living conditions following natural disasters. “The Government of Papua New Guinea stands in solidarity with the people of Bougainville people during this difficult time.

We commend the resilience of the affected communities and reaffirm our support to the Autonomous Bougainville Government in addressing immediate humanitarian needs and recovery efforts,” Mr Mana said.

The NDC continues to work closely with national agencies, provincial authorities, our development partners and UN Agencies to coordinate ongoing relief operations and assess further needs on the ground. Additional support will be mobilized as assessments continue.

The Government also acknowledges the support of development partners, UN Agencies, business houses and individuals who have contributed towards the response efforts and reiterates its commitment to strengthening disaster preparedness and resilience across the country.
