The Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) is set to deliver a defining moment in its season as Round 3 takes on a greater significance through the amplified “Men in League” round, themed around Mental Health, placing mental strength, discipline, and character at the center of the game.

The Men in League Round this year, partners with the Digicel Foundation’s Men of Honour program, which celebrates men across Papua New Guinea who lead with integrity, courage and compassion. It recognizes those who build peace, strengthen families, and uplift their communities through their actions.

As rugby league continues to grow across the country, PNGRFL is reinforcing an important message. Strength is no longer defined by physical ability alone, but by the capacity to lead, remain composed under pressure, and make the right decisions in challenging moments. Round 3 is designed to challenge players to reflect on who they are both on and off the field.

PNGRFL Chief Executive Officer, Stanley Hondina, said the initiative reflects a broader commitment to shaping better individuals through sport.

“Rugby league has always played a powerful role in our communities. It is more than a game, it is a platform that shapes behavior, discipline, and leadership. The Men of Honour theme is about reminding players that true strength is shown in how they respond to pressure and how they carry themselves every day.

We want our players to understand that their decisions matter. When they choose respect, self-control, and teamwork, they are not only improving as athletes but also contributing to stronger communities,” Hondina said.

At the core of Round 3 is a simple but powerful message and following on from the PNG Hunters “Anti- Violence” Round last week: “Not every thought deserves a reaction.” In a fast-paced and emotional sport, players are constantly faced with moments that test their discipline. The ability to pause, remain focused, and act with purpose is what separates reaction from leadership.

This message reflects the realities faced by players today. Beyond the physical demands of the game, many are managing expectations from family, coaches, and their communities. In these moments, mental strength becomes critical, allowing players to stay grounded and aligned with their values.

PNGRFL’s Pathways & Performance Elite Competition Manager, Peter Bari, highlighted the importance of mental wellbeing in building strong teams and individuals.

“Mental health is a key part of performance and personal growth. Players deal with different pressures every day, and it is important that they feel supported and connected within their teams. Creating safe environments allows players to speak up and stay focused.

“When players feel respected and valued, they perform better and develop into stronger individuals. This is what the Men of Honour message is about—building people who lead with respect and support those around them,” Bari Said.

Round 3 continues to emphasize that performance is closely linked to mental wellbeing. Players who understand their emotions, manage stress effectively, and maintain focus under pressure are better equipped to succeed. These qualities not only improve performance but also contribute to stronger team culture.

PNGRFL encourages players to carry these values of integrity, courage and compassion into their daily lives, recognizing that their influence extends beyond the field.

While Round 3 stands out as a key highlight, it forms part of a broader season-long approach aimed at developing players beyond the game. Each round delivers a message focused on mindset, behavior, and personal growth, helping players build resilience, responsibility, and respect over time.
