THE National Cultural Commission through the Institute of Papua New Guinea Studies (IPNGS), has launched ‘A Tale of Central Province’, a collection of 26 traditional stories and legends documented by students from Central province.
The Book was launched and presented to Mainohana Catholic Secondary School over the weekend, 04th September 2026.
The students from Mainohana contributed 23 of the 26 stories, making the school the major contributor of the publication.
The project began in 2023 as an IPNGS essay competition aimed at encouraging students to document and preserve cultural knowledge from and within their communties.
Acting Director of IPNGS Mr Christopher Puio, representing NCC Exevutive Director Mr Steven Enomb Kilanda emphasized that culture could be preserved through many different platforms.
” Culture can be promoted in many ways in terms of live performances, filming, and archiving, other is through theater arts and research publication and archiving.”
He said publication such as “A Tale of Central Province’ were important in ensuring cultural knowledge was documented for future generations.
Principal of Mainohana Catholic Secondary School Mr Nick Maino commended the NCC and IPNGS for giving students an opportunity to preserve and share their cultural heritage.
” We sincerely acknowledge the National Cultural Commission and the Institute of Papua New Guinea Studies for recognizing the values of stories and the knowledge our students have collected from their communities. This punkication gives our students a sense of pride because their stories have been documented and shared beyond the school.”
