National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop has vowed to introduce the Vagrancy Act in the National Parliament to remove trouble causers in Port Moresby.
“Vagrancy act is already ready. And I will give it to internal Security Minister and Justice Minister and they will take it up in the Parliament to be debated and then it will become a law. .And those who are unemployed, just loitering around, the law will allow police to remove you back to your provinces of origin”.
A fed up Governor Parkop said during the opening of the new Koki Police station that Koki and Badili areas were hotspots for rioting , looting, ethnic clashes resulting in deaths, injuries to people and destruction to properties .“We are not going to put up with this non sense any more. Port Moresby is our city. It is our image. It carries our name .Government has had enough and needs to remove people who are spoiling the city .the image is reflecting for our city is bad for the future generations to come. So whoever is spoiling our city and our future generations’ images has to go. We have to remove you. The vagrancy Act can go to the parliament for ratifications and will be implemented if needed be”.
Parkop said he has plans to remove unwanted settlers at Koki and Badili. These settlements have become hotspots for criminal activities such as violence, murder and robbery and we will not tolerate this anymore. “The plan involves conducting surveys to identify the number of settlers and settlements .the draft of the plan is ready and once information is gathered the government will work with relevant authority to implement eviction procedures. Port Moresby receives a lot of visitors, investors, tourist from other parts of the world that are here to do business and create employment opportunities. So we Papua New guineas must not limited such opportunities that are entering our door steps because of these continues illegal activities”.
