MENDI Munhiu MP, Hon. Raphael Tonpi says Mendi Munhiu District Development Authority (MMDDA) spent 2.6 million in education alone since he got elected.
“MMDDA has given a lot of attention to education over the last 8-9 months,” he said.
In March this year, the MP said three vehicles (Suzuki) were presented to the two school Inspectors, one to the District Education Advisor and another one to the Lai Valley High School.
He said MMDDA also did a presentation of K50 000 each to all the primary schools in Upper Mendi, Lai Valley and Karinz.
“We gave K200 000 each to Lai Valley High school, Karinz High School and Sumbra High School.
“Mendi Secondary and Mongol Secondary Schools received K250, 000 each.
“Mongol Secondary used their money for e-library and I am happy with their administration,” Tonpi said.
The first term MP said his DDA touched the lives of teaches, headmasters and the school administrations who wish to run school and make some changes in their school.
“We gave them the money and told them to do what they think it’s best for their school,” he said.
Mr Tonpi said there are some schools buying computers and laptops and deciding what’s best they can get for their schools, while others building staff houses and classrooms.
“So far we have received positive feedbacks from people all around the district and hoping to do more going forward,” the MP said.
Apart from this, the MP said MMDDA is also is providing incentives to the high schools and secondary schools.
Mr Tonpi said for the secondary schools, the incentive is for the grade 12s.
“If a child scores ‘A’ for a particular subject after the exam result, the teacher teaching that subject gets a K200 incentive for teaching the child well and the child also gets K200.
“If ten students score 10 As for that particular subject, the teacher walks away with K2000 at the end of the year and the students walks away with K200 each.
“The same incentive is given to grade 10s of all the five high schools and to their teachers as well,” he said.
Tonpi said the DDA is doing this to encourage both teachers and students to commit themselves in every school activities.
“Teachers will be motivated to teach and students will be motivated to learn as they know that at the end of the year, they will be going home with extra allowances,” he said.
Mr Tonpi explained that this incentive is to make sure Mendi High School and Mongol Secondary School does not send in less number of students to universities and colleges anymore.
“We don’t want the two secondary schools to provide less than ten students to universities and colleges but we want the number to increase to 40 to 50 every year,” he said.
