EXCERPTS OF MY SPEECH AT WHP PHA SWEARING IN TODAY.

Ladies and gentlemen,

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Governor Honorable Wai Rapa and his PEC, as well as Honorable Dr. Lino, Minister for Health, and the Marape Government for their unwavering trust in both me and our dedicated board.

Embarking on this journey, I am acutely aware of the significant challenges that lie ahead. It’s important to underscore that this role is entirely voluntary; it does not offer monetary compensation. However, my commitment is driven by a profound sense of purpose, grounded in three compelling reasons.

First and foremost, a deeply personal motivation fuels my dedication. I tragically lost both my parents prematurely within hospital walls. My father’s quest for medical care led him to Kundiawa Hospital, as Hagen Hospital could not provide the assistance he needed. My mother, too, passed away in Hagen Hospital. I embark on this endeavor in their honor, with the solemn aspiration to spare other families the anguish of losing their loved ones prematurely.

Secondly, the burdensome frequency of attending Haus Krais has led me to this path. The financial toll of these gatherings is significant, and it has become increasingly unsustainable. Instead of contributing to these ceremonies, I believe my efforts are better channelled into preventing avoidable deaths. It is akin to building a protective fence at the cliff’s edge rather than investing exorbitantly in a hospital situated at the foot of that precipice.

Thirdly, this journey is my way of giving back to our beloved province. Rather than remaining on the sidelines, merely critiquing, I aspire to be an active participant in finding solutions for our province and its people.

To the people of Western Highlands, rest assured that the government has entrusted this board with a clear mandate: to rectify our ailing healthcare system. I firmly believe in the capabilities of this board, and I have full confidence that we will deliver on this crucial mission.

The Western Highlands Provincial Health Authority (WHPHA) was one of the pioneering PHAs, along with Milne Bay, when the concept was first introduced over a decade ago. Regrettably, progress has not matched our initial aspirations. We will try our best to redirect its course.

To my fellow board members, I emphasize that each of you brings unique talents and expertise to the table. I anticipate an exciting and fruitful journey ahead. Welcome aboard.

To the acting CEO and the diligent hospital staff, I acknowledge your steadfast commitment in the absence of a functioning board. Your concerns will now receive the attention they deserve. If you wish to engage in politics, I encourage you to consider pursuing that avenue through elections rather than within the hospital. Be assured that this board is dedicated to addressing all of your issues.

To the people of Western Highlands and the broader Highlands region who rely on our medical facilities, including Mount Hagen General Hospital, I implore you to take charge of your own health. Our healthcare infrastructure is under considerable strain, and we must not engage in activities that further burden these facilities.

In conclusion, I express my gratitude once more, and I eagerly anticipate collaborating with each and every one of you. Together, we shall work towards a healthier and brighter future.
