Students’ use of mobile phones a concern

By Miriam MALAWA
A SECONDARY school principal in the nation’s capital says the spread of mobile phones among students has posed a significant challenge to the education system.
GEREHU Secondary School Principal Besoko Aguna said this during the school’s 18th Grade 12 graduation on Thursday.

“Our they have to be focused, but with the current challenges, a lot of our students focused have been diverted,” he said.

“About 99% of our students’ core focus on getting a better education is diverted because of the influence of mobile phones.

“It’s a big challenge.
“Rather than using mobile devices for educational purposes, students tend to be drawn to gaming and other non-educational applications.

“The school recognises the distractions posed by mobile phones and has implemented a mobile phone policy to address this issue.

“The policy is designed to keep students focused on their studies and minimize the influence of non-educational content on their education.”

Aguna urged parents to play their part and discipline their children at home, rather than relying on the teachers.

“A lot of our parent are not responsible, they put all the responsibilities on the teachers,” he said.

“They forget that learning starts at home.
Aguna however said despite the challenges, Gerehu Secondary School has remained committed to providing quality education to empower its students.

He said in terms of school performance, the school is at average (according to the national rating index).
But Aguna believes that the school has the potential to do better if the teachers are empowered and their issues are addressed, including proper housing.

L“Housing all the teachers on the school grounds will help raise the standards of education and create a more conducive learning environment. I say this because I believe in my teachers,” he said.

Gerehu Secondary School has a population of 2204 students and 68 teachers.
