THE ongoing construction of the Durand Farm Housing Project Sewage system outside 8-Mile premises will not only relief future residents but also relief the McGregor Police Barracks from its longstanding issues of sewage system.
Housing Minister Dr. Kobby Bomareo, along with National Housing Commission (NHC) Acting Managing Director Abel Tol and his team made the announcement when they inspected the construction site at the MacGregor Barracks on April 8, 2024.
The construction of 2.3km Durand Farm Sewage Pipeline which commenced already from McGregor Police Barracks, will connect to the main sewage pond outside of Morota at a cost of K3.1 million.
Minister Bomareo, a frequent visitor to the Durand Farm Project, emphasized the progress on key trunk infrastructure such as electricity, road networks, water supply, and the sewage system since the establishment of NHC’s Special Procurement Commission in February 2023.
He instructed the contractor to complete the sewage system by July 2024, aligning with the construction schedule of houses at Durand Farm.
Despite weather-related delays, progress is evident, with the basement of the pipeline laid and all necessary materials on-site.
SSD Group Commander and Senior Inspector Mr. Watkins Tolaup acknowledged the persistent sewage issue at McGregor Police Barracks which the officers and their families has been plagued for nearly two decades.
He expressed gratitude to the NHC and the Housing Minister for the project as this will significantly improve living conditions in the Police Barracks.
“Our officers and their families have endured hardships due to blocked sewage and contaminated water flooding our houses, especially during rainy seasons.
“We thank the Housing Minister and NHC for this project and pledge our assistance to ensure its successful completion,” Inspector Tolaup said.
The presence and regular inspections by Water PNG Ltd senior Engineer Mr. Sinaka Kohu were also commended by Minister Bomareo, highlighting the collaborative effort to address longstanding issues and enhance living standards for all.
