THE enduring partnership between Papua New Guinea and Australia has been celebrated through the power of military music, with the Australian Army Band visiting Port Moresby for a series of performances and community engagements.
The 10-member Australian Army Band ensemble is in Papua New Guinea this week, joining with military musicians, students and local communities to highlight the strong cultural and defence ties between the two nations.
A key moment of the visit will be a combined performance with the Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) Band at the Papua New Guinea-Australia Mutual Defence Treaty Dinner on Thursday evening. The event will mark the entry into force of the historic Pukpuk Treaty, further strengthening the formal defence relationship between PNG and Australia.
The joint performance demonstrates the important role military music plays in building relationships, promoting cultural exchange and supporting significant national ceremonies.
Officer Commanding and Music Director of the Australian Army Band Sydney, Major Greg Peterson, said the visit provided an opportunity to celebrate the shared history and friendship between the two countries.
“This visit is about celebrating our shared culture and military history, and we are honoured to do that through the medium of music. We are excited to be in Port Moresby representing the Papua New Guinea-Australia alliance through music,” Major Peterson said.
PNGDF Band Officer Commanding Lieutenant Robert Iamba said performing alongside the Australian Army Band had been a valuable experience for PNGDF musicians.
“Playing with the Australian Army Band helps build confidence within our band, and we enjoy the opportunity to express ourselves through music together,” Lieutenant Iamba said.
The Australian Army Band’s visit is part of ongoing defence cooperation activities aimed at strengthening people-to-people connections and reinforcing the close partnership between Papua New Guinea and Australia.
Through music, the two nations continue to celebrate their shared values, friendship and commitment to working together.
