GENUINE students of the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) were reportedly denied access to the Waigani Main Campus this morning between 9:00am and 10:00am, as tensions continue following the resignation of Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Findlay.
Students had gathered at the university’s main entrance to attend a peaceful assembly organised by the Student Representative Council (SRC) at Forum Square. However, their entry was reportedly blocked by UPNG Uniforce personnel.
According to students at the scene, they intended to participate in the planned assembly to raise concerns over the university’s governance issues and the circumstances surrounding Professor Findlay’s resignation.
The SRC, led by Acting President Kopari Elijah, had called for a peaceful sit-in, urging students to assemble and voice their concerns.
Eyewitnesses reported a heated exchange at the main gate as students questioned why they were being denied entry despite presenting valid university identification cards.
“We came peacefully to attend the forum called by the SRC. We are not outsiders. We are genuine UPNG students, but Uniforce has completely blocked the gate,” one student said.
The incident has raised concerns among students about their right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression within the university community.
The SRC-organised assembly was intended to demand the following:
- The immediate reinstatement of Professor Ian Findlay as Vice-Chancellor.
- A formal explanation from the University Council and Chancellor regarding his resignation.
- Intervention by the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (DHERST) and the National Executive Council (NEC).
Students maintained that their planned protest was intended to be peaceful, lawful and disciplined, calling on university authorities to respect their right to assemble and express their concerns.
