THE Department of Personnel Management (DPM) has confirmed that 25 public servants have formally resigned from the Public Service to contest the 2027 National General Election.

Of the 25 former public servants, 24 are male and one is female.

The resignations follow the closure of the statutory deadline on Thursday, October 29, 2026, in accordance with Section 55 of the Public Services (Management) Act 1995. The legislation requires public servants intending to contest the National General Election to resign at least six months before the scheduled issue of election writs on April 29, 2027.

According to DPM, the resignations were recorded across Papua New Guinea’s four regions and the National Capital District.

The regional breakdown is as follows:

  • Southern Region: 1
  • Highlands Region: 7
  • New Guinea Islands Region: 2
  • Momase Region: 2
  • National Capital District: 13

The National Capital District recorded the highest number of resignations, with 13 public servants, followed by the Highlands Region with seven.

DPM said it had provided guidance on resignation procedures, statutory requirements and the administrative responsibilities of government agencies to ensure compliance with the law ahead of the 2027 National General Election.

The requirements for public servants intending to contest the election were communicated through Circular Instructions No. 15, No. 18 and No. 24 of 2026.

Meanwhile, DPM Secretary Taies Sansan further clarified that resignation to contest an election constitutes a formal cessation of employment from the Public Service.
