THE National Capital District Provincial Health Authority (NCDPHA), in partnership with Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) through their existing Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), is strengthening maternity services across the city to ensure safer and more accessible childbirth services for mothers.

As part of this collaboration, the Labour Ward at Metoreia Urban Health Centre is now fully supported by trained midwives from both NCDPHA and PMGH, while specialist obstetric doctors from PMGH provide weekly clinical support. The facility is equipped with new delivery beds and operates 24 hours a day, ensuring mothers have access to safe, reliable, and quality maternity services close to home.

Deputy Director of Medical Services at PMGH, Dr Henao Asa, said the partnership reflects PMGH’s commitment to extending quality healthcare services into communities.

“Our vision at PMGH is to be the ultimate provider of quality healthcare for Papua New Guinea,” Dr Asa said.

“This partnership with NCDPHA allows us to extend specialist services into the community, reducing congestion at PMGH while ensuring mothers can deliver safely at Metoreia. With weekly specialist support and trained midwives, we are committed to bringing healthcare services closer to families and achieving the goals of the National

Health Plan by ensuring no one is left behind.”

Through the partnership, Metoreia Urban Health Centre has significantly increased its capacity, from handling only a few deliveries per day to now safely delivering between nine and eleven babies daily. This has helped ease overcrowding at PMGH while bringing specialist maternal healthcare directly into the community.

NCDPHA Chief Executive Officer, Dr Robin Oge, said every mother deserves safe and dignified care during childbirth.

“By working together with Port Moresby General Hospital, we are expanding maternity services so that mothers across the city can safely deliver their babies at Metoreia Urban Health Centre,” Dr Oge said.

“This partnership is about bringing healthcare closer to our people and ensuring that no mother is left behind. I sincerely acknowledge PMGH Chief Executive Officer Dr Paki Molumi and his management team for their strong commitment and continued collaboration with NCDPHA in strengthening health services for our communities.”

Expectant mothers are encouraged to visit the Metoreia Urban Health Centre Labour Ward to access these services. The facility is fully equipped to provide safe deliveries, postnatal care, and ongoing support for mothers and newborns.
