THE Minister for Education, Hon. Francis Kikin Siune, MP, has strongly condemned the recent student protest march, reported violence, and alleged deaths in Mt Hagen, Western Highlands Province, connected to Kui Wamp Nga Secondary School.
Minister Siune expressed deep sadness and concern over the situation, calling for calm, peace, and immediate cooperation from all community members and leaders.
“I strongly condemn all acts of violence, destruction of property, and any loss of life connected to the student protest,” Minister Siune stated. “Schools must remain safe and conducive environments for learning, and violence is never the solution to grievances.”
The Minister has directed the Secretary for Education, Dr. Uke Kombra, to urgently launch a full-scale investigation into the entire incident. This investigation will focus on identifying the root causes of the conflict, particularly the students’ call for the removal of the school Principal.
Furthermore, the Minister urgently calls on local community leaders, church leaders, and the Provincial Education Board (PEB) to step forward and demonstrate active leadership. They must work together with local authorities to resolve these issues peacefully and prevent any further escalation.
Students are urged to return to their homes and refrain from participating in illegal marches or violent acts. Parents and guardians are also requested to talk to their children and help restore peace in the community.
The Ministry of Education remains committed to ensuring that safety, justice, and order are restored so that normal schooling can resume safely for all students.
