THE Niu Power Sports Tok Sevens is gearing up for its Seventh Annual Tournament, set to kick off tomorrow (Friday, March 29, 2024) and span three days over the Easter Weekend.

During the official Launch of the NiuPower Sports Tok 7s on Tuesday, Tournament Director Joe Kautu highlighted significant improvements, particularly in the inclusion of male participating teams.

“This year, we’ve witnessed a substantial increase in open men’s teams, with over 32 teams signing up, a considerable jump from our usual 24,” Kautu said.
He also noted ongoing efforts to increase participation from juniors (under 20s) and women. While 12 teams each have committed for this year, under 20s and women’s categories, they are working to further bolster these numbers.

Expressing enthusiasm for the women’s teams, Kautu specifically mentioned the participation of Black Orchid’s women’s team from the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, emphasizing the importance of their inclusion in advancing women’s rugby.

Kautu also celebrated the increase in outside team participation, from 11 to 12, indicating a growing interest in the tournament.

The competition promises to be fierce, with former champions returning to compete. Papuan Compound (PC) Ravans from Lae, the two-time champions, along with new entrants like Tokilu Latatus from Biala and the reigning champions Biala Suaras, are set to battle for glory.

The tournament features eight pools of four teams each, with the top eight teams advancing to the cup and plate competitions, while teams placing ninth to sixteenth qualify for the bowl. The remaining teams will vie for the seal and trophies.

In a change to the format, the top eight teams will have a second chance to compete in the plate semi-finals and quarterfinals, adding an extra layer of excitement to the competition.

The first two days of the event will take place at Barber, with the culmination at Sir John Guise Stadium on the third day.

Competition Manager, Benson Upas, extended gratitude to NiuPower Chief Executive Officer Michael Uiare for their steadfast support over the past three years, ensuring the success of the competitions.

Cash prizes totaling K85,000 await the winners, with K20,000 for the male/open category cup champions and K15,000 for the women’s champions. Juniors will receive trophies and awards, though no cash prizes.

Families in Port Moresby are encouraged to join in the excitement over the Easter Weekend and be part of this thrilling event.
