NMS TIGERS SET TO JOIN SHP NINES TOURNAMENT

By JOEL K ANDREW

IN the midst of their debut in the prestigious NCD Governor’s Cup 2023, the recently established Rugby League team, NMS Tigers, have disclosed their participation in the upcoming Southern Highlands Provincial Nines Tournament.

The event is scheduled to take place in Mendi Town early next year.

NMS Tigers’ patron, Nason Mul Solo emphasized: “Our involvement in the SHP Nines tournament next year aligns with the primary goal of providing a platform for young rugby league talents in the country.”

He went on to articulate that, despite their status as a newly registered semi-professional off-season rugby league club, NMS Tigers is committed to both financial and mentorship support for young talents, fostering excellence in both education and sports.

“We will consistently offer the necessary support, whether financial or otherwise. It is, therefore, the responsibility of each player to demonstrate faithfulness, focus, and competence in the game.”

Mul highlighted the addition of the Vice Chancellor’s Cup premiership-winning coach, Ishmael Gesnea Sakaro, as a valuable asset to the coaching panel led by Baron Kengi.

He expressed optimism about the club’s potential to groom promising players for larger competitions in the country, such as the Digicel Exxon-Mobil Cup.

Mul urged like-minded citizens in Southern Highlands to prioritize youth empowerment for the province’s human resource development.

“We must proactively engage our youth in sports and other constructive activities for positive life impacts, demonstrating a serious commitment to change,” he said.

Meanwhile, the SHP Nines Tournament Committee has already revealed the competition dates via their social media platforms. A total of 40 teams are expected to take part in the championship.
