THE Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) has launched Starlink as its Internet Service Provider (ISP) to support its information technology and communication requirements across the force.
The launching marked an important milestone for the Defence Organization to modernize PNGDF and strengthen their communications capability.
Speaking at the launching on Tuesday, 15 September at Murray Barracks, Chief of PNGDF, Rear Admiral Philip Polewara, acknowledged that Starlink provides high-speed internet connectivity to users, particularly in geographically challenging locations where other ISP may be costly to establish.
“Papua New Guinea Defence Organization is pleased to be among organizations exploring the benefits of this innovative technology to enhance our operational effectiveness and communications capability,” said Rear Admiral Polewara.
“As we continue to modernise PNGDF and strengthen our communications capability, initiatives such as this, demonstrates our commitment to leverage emerging technologies in supporting national security, operational readiness and effective command and control across the Defence Force.”
Rear Admiral Polewara noted that with the rugged geography of PNG, Starlink will be used to connect all Defence Force bases with fast communications.
ICT Director of PNGDF, Lieutenant Colonel Joe Mwawesi said that PNGDF troops are located throughout the country by land, air and sea, and Starlink can give them accessibility to get in touch with headquarters.
Acting Chief of Force Preparations, Lt. Colonel Edward Miro noted that having real time information is very important for the Defence Force as gaps in communication may result in loss of lives and destruction of properties.
“Starlink will improve lot on our effectiveness-on how effectively we carry out our orders, our operations and be able to get information as quickly as possible, and in real time,” Lt. Col Miro said.
The Starlink ISP is in its trial stage at Murray Barracks and FSB (Force Support Battalion). PNGDF will prioritize its front-liners first, and later rolling it out to all bases of the force across the country.
