The University of Papua New Guinea Southern Highlands Students is gearing up to travel to the Southern Highlands Province this weekend to conduct its much-anticipated Text Book Drive in Secondary schools and to initiate Awareness Campaigns covering critical issues like Law and Order, Education, Health, and more, commencing next week.

Our focus is set on a transformative journey dedicated to promoting education as the cornerstone of progress and prosperity. Education stands not only as the future of SHP but also as a beacon of hope for Papua New Guinea as a whole. The investment in education signifies a commitment to nurturing future leaders, thinkers, and creators, paving the way towards a brighter and more prosperous future.

We, the SHP Students of UPNG, have taken the first step in 2023 towards this vision. Our Fundraising Dinner at the APEC Haus in October was a resounding success. Through the funds raised, the SHP UPNG Students have purchased updated Secondary School Text Books, known as SAVE BOOK, covering all subjects taught in our secondary schools. This substantial investment in educational resources will greatly benefit the students of Southern Highlands Province and beyond.

Additionally, we procured 8 brand new printers for almost K8000.00 each for the 8 secondary schools (Ialibu Secondary, Nipa Secondary, Mongol Secondary, Kutubu Secondary, Pangia Secondary, Mendi Secondary, Kaupena Secondary, and Kagua Secondary) in the Southern Highlands. These printers will facilitate the production of lesson materials. The printer supplier, Central Business System not only offered discounted prices for the 8 printers but also committed to sending a technician to assist in calibrating the machines, further fortifying our educational support infrastructure.

The majority of Southern Highlands students attending UPNG and other tertiary institutions have passed through education systems in other provinces. Only a few directly graduate from secondary schools within Southern Highlands. The UPNG students’ book drive aims to improve these numbers, focusing on encouraging more students from secondary schools in Southern Highlands Province to pursue tertiary education.

Our vision is:

  1. To achieve quality education for the students of Southern Highlands Province.
  2. To increase the number of tertiary intakes from the province.
  3. To foster an informed populace on matters of law, economy, and politics.
  4. To encourage informed decision-making.
  5. To revitalize, restore, rebuild, and transform Southern Highlands Province through Education.

In addition to the book drive, we are launching an awareness campaign on law and order, economy, politics, and other crucial issues in the province. Our goal is to ensure that every citizen is well-informed and capable of making informed decisions.

The UPNG Southern Highlands Students accomplishments since 2019 showcase our dedication and effectiveness in bringing about positive changes in the Southern Highlands Province. These actions depict a united entity capable of making a significant impact, inspiring others to work towards a brighter future for the province and its people.

Once again, we extend our deepest gratitude to the sponsors and everyone joining us in this endeavor to script a brighter future for SHP and all of Papua New Guinea. Your commitment today will shape the leaders of tomorrow.

Together, we can revive, build, and transform Southern Highlands Province through education. Thank you for joining us in this endeavor to script a brighter future for SHP and all of Papua New Guinea. Your commitment today will shape the leaders of tomorrow.
