‘Snaketastic’is a month-long snake conservation and snakebite awareness event aimed at clearing any myths that circulate about snakes, addressing common fears of snakes, profiling their importance in the ecosystem and creating awareness in the community onhow to be snake-safe.
Sharing his thoughts on the importance of the event, SJA CEO Matt Cannon said: “Snakesand humans share the environment. Normally snakes have no
interest in humans but sometimes we come across them in our day-to-daylives. Snakebites are not uncommon in PNG and pose an unrecognised threat to the health of our people, particularly the young people.
“By coming together today, we demonstrate our collective commitment to promoting awareness andfindingeffective solutions topromote abetter understanding of snakes and how humans should interact with snakes in the environment”.
One of the pillars of St John Ambulance is first aid training, and first aid is more than initial treatment, it includes awareness, and prevention
“We believe that empowering individuals with theunderstanding of snakes and the
knowledge and skills to provide immediate care during a snakebite emergency can make all the difference.
“Through our training programs, we educate our communities on recognising snakebite symptoms, applying appropriate first aid techniques, and seeking prompt medical assistance.
However, the role of St John Ambulance extends beyond justtheinitial care
“We work closely with hospitals and our medical professionals to ensure that snakebite patients receive the timely and specialised treatment they require.
“The ambulance services play a crucial role in transporting patients swiftly, ensuring they reach the medical facilities
in a safe and efficient manner.Importantly, paramedics and nurses are bringing snakebite antivenom with them when responding to snakebite patients. Early administration of antivenom can help save a life.

“Snakebites not only have physical health implications but can also cause significant emotional distress for both the victims and their families.
By collaborating with hospitals, we offer a holistic approach to snakebite prevention and management.
