BUK bilong Pikinini on Friday (05/06/26) celebrated World Environment Day with children across its Library Learning Centres through a series of fun, educational, and hands-on activities focused on environmental awareness and renewable energy under the theme “Solar Energy: Clean Light for a Healthy Earth.”

World Environment Day is celebrated globally to encourage individuals, communities, and organizations to take positive action to protect our environment. It serves as an important reminder that everyone, including young children, has a role to play in caring for our planet and creating a healthier, more sustainable future.

A highlight of this year’s celebrations is the distribution of Solar Buddy Lights, generously donated by schools in Australia.

The Solar Buddy Lights provide children with a practical STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) learning experience, demonstrating how sunlight can be converted into electricity to produce clean, renewable energy.

The activity helped children explore the benefits of solar energy and understand how renewable energy sources can reduce pollution, protect natural resources, and support sustainable communities.

For many children, these solar lights will also provide a reliable source of light for reading, learning, and household use, while reinforcing the importance of environmentally friendly technologies.

We are grateful to the schools in Australia whose students have supported this initiative through the donation of Solar Buddy Lights. Their generosity is helping children in Papua New Guinea learn about renewable energy while promoting environmental stewardship.

Throughout the day, children also participated in a variety of environmental learning experiences that promoted creativity, teamwork, and practical ways to care for the world around them. These activities encouraged children to develop positive habits that contribute to cleaner communities and a healthier environment.

By introducing environmental education at an early age, we help children develop a lifelong understanding of the importance of protecting our planet.

Buk bilong Pikinini remains committed to empowering children through quality education programs that inspire curiosity, responsibility, and a commitment to building a better future for their communities and the environment.
