Fr Jan wants education system reviewed, inclusive

Czuba emphasizes on education systems be reviewed.
DEPARTMENT of Higher Education Research Science and Technology (DHERST) Secretary Professor Fr Jan Czuba says the education system in PNG should be reviewed.

He said every year there are 21800 school-leavers , while only 12,000 students are accepted into tertiary institutions and the rest are left out.
Fr Jan said while several students manage to get into technical education and TVET colleges, others end up roaming the streets.

He said with unemployment rates at all-time highs, there needed to be a system in place to create jobs as tertiary institutions are turning out students every year into a society that has fewer job opportunities.

“There should be a system that allows for not every student going to tertiary institutions, where students after grade eight, who wish to go into studying trade skills can go straight into studying their preferred skills for certification as tradesmen or women,” Fr Jan said.
“Those who wish to continue into tertiary education can do so.”

He said while the system allows students to pass through certain stages, those who have dropped out of the system were the ones who contributed to much of the lawlessness in the country.

“To help reduce this, our education system needs to be reviewed so that there should be pathways for students interested in technical trades,” Fr Jan said.
“The system we have today is designed for us to fail and that is a great concern for us.”
