Morobe signs seasonal workers deal for students

By GABRIEL KATUHO

THE Morobe Provincial Government has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with PNG Fruit Picking and Seasonal Workers Association.

Governor Luther Wenge signed the agreement during the recent launching of the fruit-picking and seasonal workers program in Port Moresby.

He said the deal will involve the provincial government collaborating with the association to send students to Australia for seasonal fruit-picking during their holidays.

Wenge said he is happy that Morobe has joined the PNG association and is looking forward to support it.

“PNG is a good friend to Australia and they know that PNG citizens are valuable and productive workers there,” he said.

Wenge said PNG does not make enough money from its exports and so sending Papua New Guineans to Australia will bring back foreign currency that will boost the country’s economy.

He urged Morobe citizens to be good ambassadors and learn from the lifestyle of Australia.

Wenge said their attitude in Australia would paint either a good or bad picture of the country and that could have an impact on investors to the country.

Association director Lusi Singe thanked Wenge for joining the organisation and said she is ready to take her team to Morobe to recruit interested seasonal workers.

She said it is good that politicians are stepping in to support the organisation as it was filling the gap that the government should have filled.

Singe urged those who want to be the seasonal workers to utilise the opportunity so that it can help them in return.
