THE Papua New Guinea Forest Authority (PNGFA) will host three major events at APEC Haus, Port Moresby, over two days this week to advance the Government’s agenda on downstream processing, sustainable forest management, and climate resilience.
On Thursday, May 21st, 2026, PNGFA will convene the National Forestry Sector Forum. Over 300 participants from government, industry, customary landowners, civil society, and development partners are expected to attend.
The Forum will bring government, industry, landowners, and partners together to plan PNG’s transition from round log exports to downstream processing and value adding. Its main purpose is to develop a practical, inclusive Transition Plan that manages the economic and social impacts of the log export ban, addresses regulatory and investment challenges, and creates a more resilient, value-driven forestry sector that keeps jobs and benefits in-country while protecting forests for future generations.
On Friday, May 22nd, 2026, PNGFA will launch two key initiatives to strengthen downstream processing and plantation forestry.
The second day’s program has been divided into two parts whereby part one will see the launch of PNGFA’s commercial and investment arm, the PNG Diwai Holdings Limited (PNGDHL) and in part two, the National Reforestation and Afforestation Program (NRAP) 2025-2030 will be launched.
Chief Secretary to Government Ivan Pomaleu has been invited to give the keynote address of the Forestry Forum while Acting Prime Minister John Rosso has been invited to deliver the keynote address during the launching of PNGDHL and NRAP 2025-2030. Over 500 participants including ministers, government and private sector officials, forest industry executives as well as resource owners are expected to attend the three events.
Events of the two days will mark a significant milestone in the Government’s agenda to advance sustainable forest management, climate resilience, and inclusive economic growth. The NRAP establishes a long-term framework for community engagement and large-scale plantation development in degraded forest areas and non-forest areas, while PNGDHL will serve as the State’s commercial vehicle to mobilise investment, commercial partnerships, strengthen market systems and enhance value realization across the forestry sector.
The launch of PNGDHL will also include the officiating of special projects which are four Forest Industrial Parks and Log Ponds in Vanimo, Sandaun Province; Lae, Morobe Province; Abau, Central Province; and Gazelle, East New Britain Province.
These events mark a significant milestone in the
Government’s commitment to downstream processing, sustainable forest management, climate action, and inclusive economic growth.
