THE PNG Fire and Rescue Service is urging all citizens to exercise extreme caution during this dry season as fire risks remains extremely high across the country.
Chief Fire Officer, Mr. Bill Roo said prolonged dry conditions caused by EL Nino have increased the treat of structural fires and bush fires and grass fires.
Even a small spark in this weather can destroy homes and properties within minutes. We need every citizen to take responsibility for fire safety in their homes and communities; Mr. Roo said.
The Fire Service is currently facing operational challenges.
Due to funding constraints over the years, some or many of our Fire trucks are out of service due to mechanical problems, and non- payment of bills to service providers who service all trucks for us.
This has reduced our response capacity at a time when demand is highest.
Mr. Roo highlighted that another critical issue; we are also facing water shortages in some parts of the town area where water supply is controlled, and some areas are completely shut down.
This is making firefighting even more difficult during emergencies.
Despite the challenges, our officers remain on stand by and committed to serving the people.
We are limited but we are still here to protect lives and properties. What will help us most right now is the public co-operation to prevent fires before they start Mr. Roo said.
PNG Fire Service is appealing to the public to:
1. Not to burn rubbish or light fires near homes, power lines, or dry grass.
2. Supervise children and keep matches and lighters out of reach.
3. Check electrical appliances ‘and switch off power when not in use,
4. Report any fire immediately to the nearest Fire station.
5. Conserve water and assist firefighters by identifying alternative water sources in your area.
Mr. Roo concluded that Fire Prevention or Fire safety is a shared responsibility therefore, Iet us work together to prevent as many fires as we can to avoid disasters.
