THE University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) has announced scaling down of its planned 16th September celebrations for security reasons.
This was announced yesterday in a joint statement from the offices of UPNG Student Representative Council (UPNG SRC) and the Vice Chancellor.
“In light of recent security concerns and issues affecting our city, the Independence Day celebration originally planned for the 16th of September, 2023 has regrettably been cancelled.
“The safety and well-being of our students and the general public remains our top priority.”
The decision was reached collaboratively after concise deliberation by the SRC and Vice Chancellor of the UPNG in conjunction with all the 22 Provincial Leaders.
“However, we are committed to upholding the spirit of this important occasion, and as such, the scaled down celebration will take place on the 15th of September, 2023 at the forum square in the evening.
“This event aims to preserve the significance of the Independence Day while ensuring the safety of all participants.
“Please note that there will be no sale of stalls and no general public attendance will be permitted for the security of school properties.
“We understand the disappointment this may cause, but we believe this decision is necessary to ensure a secure and enjoyable experience for all.
“We kindly extend our gratitude to the students who will be participating in this exclusive celebration and look forward to creating a memorable event.”
